How to handle your Natural Tresses

Updated: Mar 12, 2019

hair could be a big mess when your just beginning your Healthy Hair Care Journey. That's what I call it when I get a new client who never went natural, which means they never had to deal with their natural curl pattern. Usually its hard to maintain your natural hair when its in this state. Just like me being your new stylist, you have to learn your hair. A lot of times I know my clients hair better than they do,lol. But im here to tell you its not that bad but it is time consuming. Natural hair no matter what the nationality is behind it, always boils down to two main things...TEXTURE AND POROSITY!!!! Once you figure those two things out everything else should just fall into place.....Syke!!!! Thats when the work really begins because at this point you will then have to find what products works best. So, First off when beginning your natural hair journey the first thing I want to know is what's wrong with your hair girl! Usually my client would say, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT!!!!!! Which is normal for me as a response. So with that being said we need to know what is the major issue your having. Usually natural hair is dry, ends are split, and the hair just won't hold a style.

I always explain to my clients that the hair is like a math problem you have to find the answers or pay me to find the answers, lol. So the hair is dry, ok. We need to add moisture right! So my first thing would be to give you a deep conditioning treatment. Which helps in many cases over time. When deep conditioning you have to be consistent that way you will find that the hair will get better over time, like a glass of wine right,lol....but seriously if that doesn't help we have to find the next big solutions and usually that would be a protein treatment. Protein treatments draws moisture to the hair and is only recommended to be used once a a month. If you use it more often than once a month you could dry the hair out because your giving it too much of what it already has like over processing the hair with a relaxer, but thats a whole other issue. So you really want to make sure you keep up with how ofter you use protein treatments but they are the best when your trying to rescue your tresses.

Now when hair is dry the results are broken ends. Due to the fact the hair has grown out and the hair on the ends are like old hair compared to the new hair, which we call new growth at the root, we have to maintain the old hair and trim it every six weeks by my cosmetology book but usually for my clients maintenance routine I would say every two months after being consist with me after 3-6 months. I say this because the hair grows on average 1/2 and inch to an inch every month so in 2 months your hair should have grown and 1 inch to 2 inches if that hair has not broken off, which is why its important to keep the hair moisturized so it doesn't dry out and the ends which are the weakest part break off before the two months come to pass to trim 1/2 inch to an inch of the weak ends in return promotes healthy tresses because your getting rid of the old to maintain the new. I get so deep when I'm talking about hair maintenance because this is a major part of your routine! Especially when trying to prevent breakage.

When the breakage is present the style just won't hold. So IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU CLIP THOSE ENDS PEOPLE!!!!!! CLIP THEM I SAID, NOT CUTTTTTTT!!!!!LOL! See i'm going into another topic when we get to talking about hair trimming and cutting but you get the picture right or nawww...I always tell my clients that I wont press them about clipping their ends but if it look bad, I definitely can't have you walking around on my watch as your hair stylist with split ends because the moment you sit in my chair my name is officially on your hair once I finish and you leave my chair. So I encourage them to clip their ends especially if you want your hair curled or even straightened. But with curls your ends are elevated and it just looks so bad and messes up the style. When your putting that heat on the ends and as I mentioned earlier those ends are dry so the more you add heat to it the more dry it gets even if you put a deep conditioner or protein treatment because at this point that hair is dead because its old hair, remember we are going out with the old and embracing the new hair its time to care for that new hair! So with proper maintenance that means keeping the hair moisturized first and foremost its helps to prevent those split ends we have to trim and hopefully not cut from splitting to the new growth and healthy hair at the top of the hair strand. Thanks for listening, lol!!!!! #healthyhaircarejourney
